With the wine duty removed in 2008, Hong Kong has become a regional wine trading and distribution hub, as well as a top global wine auction centre.
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has introduced a number of initiatives to support the continuous development of wine-related business in Hong Kong, including:
- supporting major local wine promotional events, including the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair and the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival, with a view to promoting wine trade and culture as well as encouraging investment;
- facilitating wine re-exports into Mainland China through collection of advance wine consignment information for instantaneous customs clearance at Mainland ports;
- strengthening co-operation with major wine-producing countries and regions;
- fostering wine education and manpower training;
- supporting the Hong Kong Wine Storage Management Systems Certification Scheme and Hong Kong Wine Registration Scheme;
- preventing wine counterfeits from entering into Hong Kong through the concerted efforts of the Customs and Excise Department and the industry, supported by intelligence from enforcement agents outside Hong Kong; and
- promoting zero-tariff benefits for wines manufactured in Hong Kong on their importation into the Mainland under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) framework.
